IMPD’s Halloween Safety Guidelines

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) has shared a series of safety recommendations for Halloween trick-or-treating. Here are important considerations for parents and kids before embarking on their Halloween adventures:

  1. Be weather-wise and dress appropriately for the outdoor festivities.
  2. For young children and those with special needs, ensure the presence of a responsible adult.
  3. Enhance visibility with light-colored attire or reflective tape on costumes, and ensure costumes are the right length to prevent tripping.
  4. When wearing face masks, prioritize visibility and avoid wearing them inside businesses.
  5. Refrain from using props like toy guns that may resemble real weapons.
  6. Whenever possible, opt for daylight hours, or bring a flashlight if you plan to be out after dark.
  7. Only give and accept treats that are wrapped or packaged securely.
  8. Prior to indulging in your candy collection, thoroughly inspect it. If you come across any suspicious items, immediately contact the police. You can reach IMPD at 317-327-3811, and in the case of injuries, dial 911 for immediate assistance. Stay safe and have a spooktacular Halloween!
